5.15pm I'd suggest we are fairly close to call-off unless there has been a dramatic change. When asked if it looks terminal, Fidel at the ground says "Very."
For those of you asking, 9346 at the ground today. So some way from a full house. Bigger crowds expected over next two days.
And, the news has just come through, play abandoned for the day. So it's a rather soggy end to the first day of England's season. But it's been a fascinating 53 overs. All Sri Lanka at 83 for 5 - and they'll still be fairly happy with the score - but Hales and Bairstow have played very well to bring England back. We will make up time over the rest of the match, but play still starts at 11am. So we'll see you back here for that. For now, though, from Gnasher and Alan it's goodbye and thanks for joining us.
5.00pm A last reminder to tweet your question for #PoliteEnquiries (remember the hashtag - and don't ask the questions on here!)
4.50pm Some extra covers being brought on so this isn't looking hopeful for any resumption in play.
Shakeena: "Then why do you guys only commentate in test matches why not in IPL ? That's because you love tests Mr. Andrew old chap :D" Because our colleagues in the India office to the IPL commentary as we have the English county season to cover (and we are a smaller team in London).
Vince: "Very dark here in town, looks a bit lighter out Headingley ways but would be surprised if there's any more play today."
James: "I think the weather is coming to Headingley from the west. I'm in Manchester, and, if that's right, it's not good news, I'm afraid. That may be it for the day (hope this jinxes the rain!)." Yes, the radar would suggest the same
4.45pm SanjayN: "@ Andrew McGlashan: Pls. don't be so dismissive, there's plenty of the usual IPL/India blame game in the various comments section. Listening to TMS right now; there's a lovely discussion on what needs to be done to raise interest in cricket." I wasn't being dismissive. I was just saying that comments I had seen today were more just people saying how nice it was for Tests to back. Of course there's a wider debate to be had
4.30pm The umpires are out in the middle having a chat with the groundsman. The covers remain in place.
Andrew Dickens: "Likewise Graeme Hick would have been up there based. Surely temperament is much more important Michael Vaughan's debut in South Africa comes to mind."
4.25pm AJ Cook: "@chris, while I agree that a First Class average is a good indicator of success at test level, if it was the only indicator, Mark Ramprakash would have been England's leading run scorer of all time!"
Shakeena: "We are collecting food items and clothes for the people who are affected by rain Mr. Andrew. It's chaos here in Sri Lanka. Pray for us and nice to see you guys again my friends. missed you guys so much :)" Our thoughts are with all those affected in Sri Lanka
John: "This is an important innings for Hales, not only for this game, but because he needed badly to spend time at the crease getting to know what test cricket is all about. He's looked like a test cricketer today."
4.15pm Hello, Gnasher here. Still pretty dank at the ground. So to brighten your day, here is Andrew Miller's tea report. Also seems a timely moment for this piece, too, from a chat I had with Matt Prior.
Chris: "I am at Uni in Leeds less than 2 miles away from the ground. Grey but not raining here. Need the game to get back on so I can stop revising!"
Keyser Soze: "Bairstow's first class record suggests he's going to be a better batsman than Prior -and that's saying something!" He may play as a specialist batsman again
Prasad: "Every year during IPL, we get a Test series in England and I see similar comments coming in about how IPL is destroying cricket and Test cricket is keeping it alive. When will we realize that T20 has helped Test cricket? Guess people have forgotten the snoozefest Test cricket from 70s till 90s, where a score of 300 in a day was considered as a great score." Not sure how much of the talk today as been about destroying cricket, just that people are pleased to see some Test cricket. The two can live together.
4.05pm: For the avoidance of doubt, it is currently raining in Headingley. The square has been covered up and we are facing a bit of a delay.
3.45pm: England will feel they've got themselves back in this, a restorative tonic of a stand between Hales and Bairstow taking them to tea in a position of far greater comfort than looked likely half an hour after the lunch interval. Their unbroken association has more than doubled the score, after England were 83 for 5, and Rangana Herath might have to settle in for a holding shift this evening (fingers crossed the weather holds). Gnasher will be back in 15 for the resumption... Ach, might have spoken to soon: there's a bit of drizzle in the air and the covers are coming on.
While we await news of any potential delay, start mulling those #PoliteEnquiries. And then start tweeting them.
52.6
Herath to Hales, no run, quicker ball, angled in with the arm, tapped away into the leg side - and that'll be tea m'dears
52.5
Herath to Hales, no run, tossed up on the stumps and defended
Sounds like the beginning of some boozy lowing on the Western Terrace... Could be a fun evening session, if it doesn't rain
52.4
Herath to Bairstow, 1 run, tip and run from YJB, on to the front foot and pushing short of mid-off
52.3
Herath to Hales, 1 run, flatter from Herath, the ball sits up to be punched through the covers to the sweeper
52.2
Herath to Hales, no run, tossed up and blocked diligently coming forwards on off
52.1
Herath to Hales, no run, flighted outsdid off, Hales leans out to defend
Herath to wheel away, one more over before tea... Speaking of which, here's Dan Thomas: "I realise we've had a clatter of wickets but this over rate is diabolical. Umpires with cattleprods by 2018, ICC, if you're reading."

Mathews to Bairstow, no run, line and length around off stump, carefully blocked on the front foot
51.4
Mathews to Bairstow, no run, jumps across on off stump to defend
51.3
Mathews to Bairstow, no run, fuller length, maybe stops a little in the surface as Bairstow pushes forward, in the air but short of the tumbling dive of cover
51.2
Mathews to Bairstow, 2 runs, short and straight from Mathews, this time there's a tickle fine to give YJB a couple more
Here's James: "This partnership has now more than doubled the score. 83/5 when they came together, and 84 added as I write." Something Prior-esque about Bairstow's contribution here
51.1

"So, Hales can bat at a strike rate of less than 50. If he can help England get over 300 it's a good job done..." opines David, slipping back towards the realms of overconfidence
50.6
Herath to Hales, no run, full and floaty, no real turn for Herath so far, blocked comfortably
50.5
Herath to Hales, no run, big appeal from behind the stumps, think this had drifted a little too far towards leg as Hales attempted to sweep, maybe a bottom edge, too, before hitting the front pad and Dar again isn't interested
50.4
Herath to Hales, no run, pushed through a bit quicker outside off, tapped into the covers
50.3
Herath to Hales, no run, going on with the arm, Hales defends
50.2
Herath to Hales, FOUR, lovely stroke, full outside off and Hales kneels down to proposition it through the covers for four

49.6
Mathews to Bairstow, FOUR, just a fraction of width here, Bairstow plays it cutely, opening the face and running the ball past gully for four - up goes the bat again, saluting the cheers around the ground for his fifty
49.5
Mathews to Bairstow, no run, Mathews probes away, YJB again gets solidly in behind it on off stump
"I have watched so much t20 that i forgot that DRS exist." Let the readjustment therapy being, Sam
49.4
Mathews to Bairstow, no run, line and length, shows it the maker's name
49.3
Mathews to Bairstow, no run, good length, tight to off stump, worked gently down into the leg side
49.2
Mathews to Bairstow, no run, drops back in the crease and leaves outside off
49.1
Mathews to Hales, 1 run, Mathews is too straight to Hales here, flicked away through backward square for one

"Just tuned in and had to see the scoreboard to believe it....SL without their England hero Dhammika too," gurgles Rasik. "Test match cricket is here...thank god! I was getting tired of Kohli and DeVilliers pummel hapless bowlers in T20s..."
48.6
Herath to Bairstow, 4 leg byes, oh, cheeky, Bairstow shapes to paddle the ball fine on the leg side and somehow sends it skittering past slip, who had begun to move across. Might have been a bottom edge, or off the front pad, well outside the line
48.5
Herath to Bairstow, no run, angled in on the stumps, worked to the on side
48.4
Herath to Bairstow, no run, gives it some air, on the front foot and driven, mid-off dives to cut it off
48.3
Herath to Bairstow, no run, props forward, hit on the front pad, that's close as well... Aleem Dar shakes his head but, after a long delay, Mathews decides to review. Again, this is going to be tight, I think. No bat involved, past the inside edge, hitting the knee roll... but again missing leg! More boisterous jeers from the Headingley crowd and Bairstow will carry on regardless
48.2
Herath to Bairstow, SIX, heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer'es Jonny! Skips down the pitch and clubs Herath back over his head, just about clears the rope at long-on
48.1
Herath to Bairstow, no run, tossed up and pushed back to the bowler
SL could have done without that reprieve, these two are going along well

50.1
Herath to Hales, no run, gives it some air, on the stumps and tucked to the leg side
End of over 50 (5 runs) England 163/5
JM Bairstow 51 (60b 6x4 1x6)
AD Hales 66 (143b 11x4 0x6)
AD Mathews 5-1-22-0
HMRKB Herath 4-1-11-0
End of over 49 (10 runs) England 158/5
JM Bairstow 47 (55b 5x4 1x6)
AD Hales 65 (142b 11x4 0x6)
HMRKB Herath 4-1-11-0
AD Mathews 4-1-17-0
