End of over 47 (wicket maiden) South Africa 136/4

        DW Steyn 0 (3b 0x4 0x6)
        AB de Villiers 37 (83b 6x4 0x6)
        ST Finn 8-3-27-3
        MM Ali 15-3-36-0

5.35pm: Another festively plump day of Test match action gets a grandstand finish, with England closing in despite the mandatory AB de Fiance. He is the key man if South Africa are going to get out of this - most likely via grim resistance, even though a chase remains theoretically possible. The target is 280 runs away, while England will have 90 overs to try and get six wickets; Steven Finn looks the most likely of Blockbusters but Moeen Ali will have a big role to play, too. How crucial will Bairstow's miss of de Villiers be? We'll have to wait to find out. Gnasher's report will be in the slot soon and we'll be back for more in the morning. I'll leave you with this, from JT: "Dale didn't bungle it, but the flag of St George is on top. The Rainbow nation will need to bat like Geoffrey to save the game tomorrow." Cheerio

46.6

Finn to Steyn, no run, short and climbing through outside off, another Zippy ball but Dale doesn't Bungle it and he'll be back in the morning - that is stumps, with England a de Villiers from victory (you would think)

Finn runs back to his mark, while Steyn does a bit of gardening... He wants this to be the last ball

46.5

Finn to Steyn, no run, slightly back of a length, defended safely down into the ground

Taylor goes in under the helmet, right in Steyn's eyeline. There's a short leg too

46.4

Finn to Steyn, no run, hammers the ball in on a length, it kicks and hits the splice as Steyn bravely gets into line

In comes Dale Steyn as nightwatchman, despite his injured shoulder... And the umpires have now decided to change the ball, something they had been asked about and declined earlier in the over. Sure Faf will be happy to see that

46.3

Finn to du Plessis, OUT, extra bounce, du Plessis plays... and he's gone, taken at slip! What a breakthrough, brilliant delivery from Finn and Cook does not blink at the chance, England have knocked another brick out of the wall in the dying moments of the day! It was a ripper of a delivery from Finn, coaxing something extra out of the surface, enough to breach du Plessis' barricades at last

F du Plessis c Cook b Finn 9 (103m 66b 1x4 0x6) SR: 13.63
46.2

Finn to du Plessis, no run, comes across and defends on off stump once again

"'I am just wondering, is there not a really good wicketkeeper in England who can bat a bit?' Sarah Taylor." Fair shout, Paul

46.1

Finn to du Plessis, no run, in the channel outside off, left alone

Maybe a couple more overs left in the day... SA sandbagging for the close

End of over 46 (maiden) South Africa 136/3

        AB de Villiers 37 (83b 6x4 0x6)
        F du Plessis 9 (63b 1x4 0x6)
        MM Ali 15-3-36-0
        ST Finn 7-2-27-2

"Just sent a real funny comment and Alan ignored it. Now he will either ignore this one too or say it was not funny at all or both." Just ask yourself, vibhash, was it really funny?

45.6

Ali to de Villiers, no run, tossed up on middle and leg, pushed away with everlasting determination
45.5

Ali to de Villiers, no run, leans out and smothers a full, straight offbreak

Silly point comes in, joining slip, leg slip and short leg

45.4

Ali to de Villiers, no run, straighter, tapped down on to the pitch
45.3

Ali to de Villiers, no run, pushed through outside the line of off, jumps into line and shows it the maker's name
45.2

Ali to de Villiers, no run, more resolute defence from AB
45.1

Ali to de Villiers, no run, tossed up on the stumps, straightening as de Villiers knocks it away on the back foot

End of over 45 (3 runs) South Africa 136/3

        F du Plessis 9 (63b 1x4 0x6)
        AB de Villiers 37 (77b 6x4 0x6)
        ST Finn 7-2-27-2
        SCJ Broad 11-4-25-0

Here's Hypocaust: "There's rarely an England XI announced that doesn't have observers cooing over the batting abilities of the tail, so why not think radically/ultra traditionally and pick a specialist keeper to bat #11? Bates for England!" Sadly, I think he's given up the gig... Although he was briefly on Sky earlier, giving coaching tips to the England U-19s

44.6

Finn to du Plessis, no run, hurled down on off stump, du Plessis watches it all the way and stuns it dead
44.5

Finn to de Villiers, 1 run, straighter line, only 130kph from Finn, nudged into that gap at midwicket again
44.4

Finn to de Villiers, no run, gets into line and bunts the ball down into the off side with immaculately soft hands
44.3

Finn to du Plessis, 1 run, drops back and drops the ball to leg again, this is a much tighter run and de Villiers is scrambling as the throw comes in, needed a direct hit, though
44.2

Finn to de Villiers, 1 run, length ball around off stump, turned off through the leg side for a single
44.1

Finn to de Villiers, no run, charges in and hits the bat hard as de Villiers defends on the back foot

Moeen is off, ruing his luck I should imagine, Steven Finn replacing him

End of over 44 (maiden) South Africa 133/3

        F du Plessis 8 (61b 1x4 0x6)
        AB de Villiers 35 (73b 6x4 0x6)
        SCJ Broad 11-4-25-0
        MM Ali 14-2-36-0

"Alan, Adam Voges is something of a 'museum piece', and his selection this year has worked out pretty well, batting average over 85." Well, mainly because he's duffed up West Indies on several occasions, Phil. Not saying there isn't a place for old dogs - just that England aren't going to select one as wicketkeeper

43.6

Broad to du Plessis, no run, continues to try and mess with the perspective by running in at an angle, hard to discombobulate du Plessis in this sort of mood and he blocks in front of his wicket
43.5

Broad to du Plessis, no run, Broad starts behind the umpire and runs wide before delivering the ball in the channel, du Plessis squints at it and offers no stroke
43.4

Broad to du Plessis, no run, full length, grunt of exertion from Broad as Faf plants the front foot and smells the leather in defence
43.3

Broad to du Plessis, no run, pitched up, props out and dead-bats another
43.2

Broad to du Plessis, no run, gets into line and blocks once more, du Plessis practising his pointillism
43.1

Broad to du Plessis, no run, good length around off stump, punched square

James Taylor is brought in under Faf's nose at silly point

End of over 43 (maiden) South Africa 133/3

        AB de Villiers 35 (73b 6x4 0x6)
        F du Plessis 8 (55b 1x4 0x6)
        MM Ali 14-2-36-0
        SCJ Broad 10-3-25-0

"Bairstow's 'missed stumping' is perhaps the hardest type of stumping chance there is," says Andrew Harries. "Ray Jennings (currently doing SABC commentary) thinks so to....although I'm sure Ray would have taken the chance." I guess he was a little unsighted as the ball drifted across the batsman and then spun the other way... But he had a long time to adjust

42.6

Ali to de Villiers, no run, off-stump line, pushed back down the track - maiden for Moeen, his second of the innings
42.5

Ali to de Villiers, no run, tossed up, reaches out and defended again
42.4

Ali to de Villiers, no run, quicker delivery and de Villiers continues to block
42.3

Ali to de Villiers, no run, half forward, pushes back towards the bowler
42.2

Ali to de Villiers, no run, gets forward and defends
42.1

Ali to de Villiers, no run, stays round the wicket, worked to the leg side from the crease

        KJ Abbott 15.4-3-39-1

That feels like a waste from Stokes...yes, I know all the debates in favour etc

73.6

Piedt to Stokes, OUT, and this time the reverse sweep brings his downfall...a top edge (or maybe glove) loops to slip. Yes, it was glove. This time Elgar doesn't drop a dolly. Good response from Piedt

BA Stokes c Elgar b Piedt 5 (12m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 35.71
73.5

Piedt to Stokes, no run, shorter, he goes onto the back foot and whips to mid-on
73.4

Piedt to Stokes, no run, comes forward and defends to cover...Stokes itching to be aggressive
73.3

Piedt to Stokes, no run, outside off, left alone
73.2

Piedt to Stokes, no run, defended on the back foot
73.1

Piedt to Stokes, FOUR, brings out the reverse sweep and plays it superbly, the ball was angled into middle and leg but he still made excellent contact and it races to deep point

Abbott to Taylor, no run, tight stuff from Abbott, outside off, full and coming back into Taylor who plays to the leg side
72.5

Abbott to Taylor, no run, full outside off, he comes forward and drives to cover
72.4

Abbott to Taylor, no run, that's quite a tight leave as it comes from outside off
72.3

Abbott to Taylor, no run, shorter in length, defended
72.2

Abbott to Taylor, no run, worked off the stumps into midwicket
72.1

Abbott to Taylor, no run, full outside off, defended to the covers

Alastair: "Roots failure to convert is a touch worrying got him in sure. Mind I'd rather he gets 50 and out than 5 and out." He's frustrated by it. Still not a bad year, though

End of over 72 (maiden) England 193/4

        JWA Taylor 31 (69b 2x4 0x6)

71.6

Piedt to Stokes, no run, back on a full length, defended to the off side
71.5

Piedt to Stokes, no run, a shorter ball, he goes for the pull again, the ball spins and bounces over the top edge
71.4

Piedt to Stokes, no run, solidly forward this time, blocked
71.3

Piedt to Stokes, no run, comes forward, trapped between bat and pad, a strangled appeal for lbw
71.2

Piedt to Stokes, no run, dragged down shorter, onto the back foot and pulled to midwicket
71.1

Piedt to Stokes, no run, big spin! Tossed up outside off, rips away from the left hander and beats the edge although Stokes is playing a long way from his pad

Some reports that Stokes was hobbling a little this morning so will be interesting to see how well he moves in this innings

End of over 71 (3 runs) England 193/4

        BA Stokes 1 (2b 0x4 0x6)
        JWA Taylor 31 (69b 2x4 0x6)
        KJ Abbott 14.4-2-39-1
        DL Piedt 21-3-80-2

S Janakiraman: "Hard to understand.....why can't we just accept that, at this stage, England is a much superior side and that SA is being outplayed.....as we speak.......workload is just an escapism....:)" Well, live is certainly tougher when you aren't winning

70.6

Abbott to Stokes, 1 run, short of a length on leg stump, flicked off the hip to long leg to get off the mark
70.5

Abbott to Stokes, no run, beaten first ball, pushed across on a full length outside off, Stokes is feeling for it with static footwork

So Steven Smith will end 2015 as the leading Test run-scorer...Root kicks the turf as he wanders off

70.4

Abbott to Root, OUT, and he's gone! Almost out of nowhere if I'm honest, Root had looked so solid. A length ball outside off and a half-hearted cut gets a top edge and is safely held at first slip

JE Root c van Zyl b Abbott 73 (192m 128b 5x4 1x6) SR: 57.03

David: "@Niranjan - I totally agree. Think captaincy is getting to Amla...."

70.3

Abbott to Root, no run, touch shorter, defended on the back foot
70.2

Abbott to Root, 2 runs, super stroke, although it will only bring a couple, he went with the swing and flicked it strongly to the right of mid-on who manages to get a hand on it with a dive
70.1

Abbott to Root, no run, full outside off, he's getting some tail into Root as well, pushed into the on side

Abbott into the attack

Paul leonard: "All this talk of heavy workload is frankly nonsense when it comes to SA. They hardly play test cricket compared to india, eng or aus. That's really their biggest problem. The icc has been rigged by the big 3 and is ruining cricket by making the system so unfair for the other nations. We need a proper test championship where everyone plays each other the same amount home and away." It's not just Test cricket which is part of the workload debate...but is a valid argument

End of over 70 (7 runs) England 190/3

        JE Root 71 (124b 5x4 1x6)

69.6

Piedt to Root, 1 run, onto the back foot and nudge into square leg...smart over of batting
69.5

Piedt to Taylor, 1 run, uses his feet and makes it into a full toss, crunches it straight but Piedt gets a hand on it in his followthrough
69.4

Piedt to Root, 1 run, brings the sweep out again, goes squarer this time and deep square gets around
69.3

Piedt to Root, no run, worked away from middle, backward of square on the leg side

Niranjan Jha: "Any thoughts on Amla's captaincy? It seems to be taking its toll on his own performance and he does not seem very dynamic on the field either. That matters a lot, I think, especially when your team is down" Not sure he loves the job

69.2

Piedt to Root, FOUR, ah, that's lovely this time, he waited a fraction longer and this time paddled it finer of the man at 45 degrees...delightful touch play from Root
69.1

Piedt to Root, no run, round the wicket, outside leg stump, swept by Root but he picks out short fine leg

66.2
Root to Elgar, no run, tossed up outside off, hint of turn, left alone
66.1
Root to Elgar, no run, round the wicket, full on the stumps, defended
Joe Root into the attack. Spin twins.

65.3

65.2
Ali to Steyn, no run, staying on the back foot, blocked down by his feet
65.1
Ali to Steyn, no run, he's right across his stumps, defends to the leg side
Hermes: "The fine innings by Compton is even better defined now in the context of a deteriorating pitch and so is this terrific one by Elgar. An exciting match is being set up depending on how the team bat in the second innings ... though this innings is by no means over! Love these gritty, tough test matches. I also cannot understand how fans are dismissing SA as a has been after just one bad series ... "
End of over 65 (2 runs) South Africa 168/7
        D Elgar 90 (198b 8x4 1x6)
        DW Steyn 0 (12b 0x4 0x6)
        ST Finn 15-1-49-0
        MM Ali 17-2-47-3
64.6
Finn to Elgar, 2 runs, neatly played, gets across the crease and nudges this in front of square into the leg side which takes him into the 90s
64.5
Finn to Elgar, no run, left alone outside off
Simon Barton: "Supposing England will be batting again soon, will they be brave enough to put Compton in to open with Cook, seeing as though the pitch is slow and tough to bat on. Hales could come in at three with license to smack it around. Thoughts?" Not a question of being brave but why fiddle with a batting order so early in a series?
64.4

Finn to Elgar, no run, fuller outside off, head over the ball, blocked
64.3

Finn to Elgar, no run, back of a length outside off, defended to the covers

        DW Steyn 0 (12b 0x4 0x6)
        D Elgar 88 (192b 8x4 1x6)
        MM Ali 17-2-47-3
        ST Finn 14-1-47-0

Fraser King: "I think Bairstow deserves a run in the side, his keeping will improve the more he does it at international level. He's a better test batsmen than Buttler as well because he can build an innings rather than getting a quick 40 then getting out"

63.6

Ali to Steyn, no run, pushed back to the bowler
63.5

Ali to Steyn, no run, a little shorter and he defends on the back foot with soft hands
63.4

Ali to Steyn, no run, flicks this from outside off into midwicket
63.3

        DW Steyn 0 (9b 0x4 0x6)
        ST Finn 14-1-47-0
        MM Ali 16-2-46-3

Magnus: "Elgar looks really good, already impressed me on the India tour, even though his scores don't suggest that. New Graeme Smith?" Graeme Smith might be the new Graeme Smith if he makes a comeback

62.6

Finn to Elgar, 1 run, tucks this from outside off into the leg side wide of mid-on so he keeps the strike which will please South Africa
62.5

Finn to Elgar, no run, short of a length, Elgar hops into line and plays it back down the pitch which both feet off the ground

Matthew Warwick: "I like Bairstow, but I would feel much happier with Buttler behind the stumps."

62.4

Finn to Elgar, no run, full outside off, driven into the pitch and it finds Taylor at cover
62.3

Finn to Elgar, no run, driven firmly back to Finn who gets low in his followthrough
